Society of puppets #Herkansing

In modern day society we are constantly manipulated and affected by multinationals and other big cop rations such as H&M, Zara, Nike, Adidas. These corporations have such influence at consumers that they are basically deciding what we are going to wear.

We as a project group used this knowledge in our event for school. The event, the Appearance Experience is a event where all first year students of International Lifestyle Studies had to create an event where the theme Shifting Identities came forward.

#Whatisit?

Our event showed the stage of an individual in tree stages of developing his own identity.
The individual represented tree puppets who were controlled and manipulated by big multinationals who are basically determining their identity and the shift. They determine what the new trends going to be and what everyone automatically is going to wear.

The first puppet of society is a girl who is still trapped and still very controlled by the multinationals. In her closet are hanging all sort of mainstream brands. Her appearance is a pants, a jacket and a t-shirt. All white. All very simple and mainstream. She wears a mask because she doesn’t have her own identity. Above her head is a cross with strings attached. Her hands are attached to the strings. This represents the fact that she is still caught in the hands of the multinationals.

The second puppet is half attached to the strings. His appearance is all clean white as well and he is trying to break free from the multinationals. His appearance looks like a cocoon. His hair is tucked in. He is trying to break free and trying to find his own identity.

The last puppet is completely free from the strings. She has a big extravagant dress on and her hair is wild as well. She has silver extreme make up on.

#Whyisitcool?

With this event we want to make clear to people that our identities are defined by not ourselves, but big corporations. They decide what we are wearing and ultimately a piece of our identity. We are constantly manipulated by the fashion industry. With our message we give people something to think about.
